South Korea’s government has a big plan to boost its universities worldwide. They want 300,000 foreign students by the year 2027 , called the “Study Korea 300K Project ”. It adds easy rules to bring in way more international students to Korean universities.
By June 2023 , international students numbers in South Korea jumped 17.6% from the year before – a massive increase showing the country’s popularity . Now they aim for 300,000 total , which means about 30% more growth . South Korea wants to be the top education destination , and new perks make it better for students who want to study there.
NEW SCHOLARSHIP PERKS AND STEM FOCUS
South Korea is boosting scholarships and putting a big focus on STEM (science, tech, engineering, math) studies as part of the Study Korea 300K project. They’re doubling the funding for the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) in these fields , which covers full tuition, monthly living stipends , airfare , Korean language training and medical insurance. They also want students to go to universities outside Seoul , to spread opportunities around the country.
Scholarships will go up for students from places like Poland and UAE in defense , nuclear tech and for India and Pakistan in STEM fields .This helps mix up the student crowd.
They are thinking of lowering the test of proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) requirements to Level 3 instead of higher. The concern arises from the possibility that offering these additional scholarships may distract students from their studies, decrease their academic performance and create difficulties with adjusting to the new culture due to having to balance their time between intensive STEM coursework, part-time jobs and overcoming language barriers.
VISA CHANGES , PART-TIME AND SUPPORT SERVICES
South Korea is making it way easier for international students to stay after graduation by speeding up permanent residency (PR). Right now , if you graduate with a Korean degree , you have to live and work there for 6 years before applying for PR. The government wants to cut that down to just 3 years. This helps students settle in faster , grab good jobs in fields like tech or engineering and help Korea’s economy – especially since the country has an aging population and needs young talent.
For student visas they are lowering the required money you should have in your bank account. Plus, more hours allowed for part time jobs.
All this makes studying there cheaper and more appealing.
This is all part of the “ Study Korea 300K Project “. Students can work part-time 20-30 hours a week while studying and after graduation, they get a visa to job – hunt for 2 years. There’s a big focus on STEM (science, tech, engineering, math) with English – taught programs at top schools like KAIST and Seoul National University .These schools partner with companies like Samsung and Hyundai for internship.
